So, if you are looking for metabolism boosting drinks to help you lose weight, keep reading. In this post, I share 9 of the best with you.

Metabolism And Weight Loss

Before we get into the best metabolism boosting drinks, let’s briefly discuss the basics of metabolism.

What is it?

Metabolism is the body’s internal process of converting what you eat and drink into the energy it needs to function.

Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body uses to carry out basic functions like breathing, blood circulation, and temperature regulation.

Your BMR is influenced by your age, weight, height, and gender. These factors contribute to the number of calories your body needs to function daily.

Key Influences on Metabolism

What is the best drink to speed up metabolism

Age greatly influences metabolism, with BMR generally slowing as we age and lose muscle mass.

This is why it often gets harder to lose weight as we age and why many start struggling as early as their 30s, especially in their 40s and 50s.

Gender also plays a big role. Typically, men have less body fat and more muscle than women of the same age and weight, meaning they have a higher BMR, so they can eat more without gaining weight.

The overall speed of your metabolism is heavily tied to whether or not you are at a healthy weight. If you have a higher BMR, losing and maintaining weight will be easier compared to those with a slower BMR.

This is why finding ways to increase your metabolism, like increasing muscle mass and consuming the right foods and drinks, can be super helpful, especially for those who naturally have a slower metabolism.

You can find some of the best superfoods to boost metabolism here. But without further ado, let’s get to the best metabolism boosting drinks!

9 Best Metabolism Boosting Drinks

1. Black Coffee

morning drink to boost metabolism

If you love coffee, like I do, you’ll be happy to know it can be great for your metabolism. I have to have my coffee in the mornings, and for me, it’s the perfect morning drink to boost metabolism.

But how does coffee help?

Coffee contains caffeine, a natural stimulant known for increasing alertness and focus.

However, caffeine’s benefits extend beyond your favorite morning pick-me-up. It plays a vital role in boosting metabolism through several mechanisms.

But how exactly does coffee help with metabolism?

Caffeine stimulates thermogenesis, the process by which the body generates heat and burns calories. By increasing thermogenesis, coffee prompts the body to expend more energy, thereby contributing to a higher metabolic rate.

But that’s not all. Coffee can help improve your workouts. When consumed before a workout, coffee can enhance your physical performance by mobilizing fatty acids from fat tissues and making them available as a source of energy.

This effect can lead to improved endurance and calorie burn during exercise.

Coffee can also help with weight loss by acting as an appetite suppressant. It has been shown to temporarily suppress appetite, which can help reduce overall calorie intake throughout the day.

Coffee is also loaded with antioxidants and is actually really good for you as long as you don’t overdo it due to the caffeine content. It’s best to drink it black to get all the benefits without the extra sugar and calories.

2. Ginger tea

drinks to boost metabolism

Ginger is often referred to as a superfood because it is loaded with disease-fighting antioxidants and used around the world as a natural remedy for many ailments. I love ginger. Not only is it great for soothing an upset stomach, but it can also really help boost your metabolism.

But how does ginger tea help increase metabolism?

Ginger is known to possess thermogenic properties, increasing the body’s internal temperature and stimulating calorie burning.

The thermogenic properties of ginger can boost calorie burn by increasing the body’s metabolic rate and promoting the breakdown of stored fat for energy production.

It can also help reduce inflammation. Chronic inflammation can hinder metabolic processes and lead to many conditions and diseases, including obesity. Ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce inflammation, thereby supporting metabolic function.

Maintaining stable blood sugar levels is also essential when trying to lose weight. One of the benefits of ginger is its ability to help regulate blood sugar levels and prevent spikes and crashes that can negatively affect metabolism and weight loss.

Lastly, ginger can help suppress your appetite, helping you eat less to maintain a calorie deficit and lose weight.

To make ginger tea, you can buy tea bags or ginger powder packets at your local grocery store. Alternatively, you can skip the tea bags and powders and make it from scratch.

To make:

  1. Cut off a 1-inch piece of ginger and chop.
  2. Add to a saucepan along with 1 cup of water.
  3. Bring to a boil, simmer for about 5-7 minutes, and enjoy!

Ginger tea is one of the best homemade drinks to boost metabolism and lose weight.

3. Green tea

morning drinks to boost metabolism

When it comes to metabolism and weight loss, green tea is a powerhouse! The help it provides goes way beyond metabolism.

While it does help increase your metabolic rate, it also helps suppress appetite, stabilize blood sugar, and reduce stress, all of which are helpful with weight loss.

One of the biggest reasons green tea is so amazing is due to its high content of antioxidants.

Green tea is rich in plant-based compounds called polyphenols. Of the many polyphenols found in green tea, the most prominent type of polyphenols are called catechins.

There are four main types of catechins in green tea, but the most powerful is the incredibly potent Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).

This compound is vital in boosting metabolism by increasing the body’s ability to burn fat by stimulating thermogenesis.

Green tea also contains caffeine. Both EGCG and caffeine alone can help speed metabolism, but they are super powerful when combined.

This combination makes green tea so powerful when it comes to boosting metabolism.

Green tea is great, but if you want to up the calorie burn, consider trying matcha, as it is way more potent. For more info on matcha and how to make it, check out this post on matcha tea.

4. Protein drinks/shakes

Protein Drink

Protein shakes are a must when looking for the best metabolism boosting drinks. Because when it comes to weight loss, protein reigns supreme. Of the three macronutrients, protein requires the most calories to digest.

Carbs require 5-10% of the calories consumed to digest it. Fats require 0-3%, while protein requires 20-30% of the calories consumed for digestion.

This means that consuming more protein will burn more calories. One of the biggest challenges we face when losing weight is muscle loss.

Protein shakes help build and preserve muscle mass by providing essential amino acids necessary for muscle repair, growth, and maintenance.

They help elevate the body’s basal metabolic rate by supporting lean muscle mass and increasing calorie burn even at rest.

Protein shakes promote feelings of fullness and satiety, which can help regulate appetite, prevent overeating, and support weight loss efforts.

I like to use whey isolate protein powder for my shakes because it’s a purer form of whey, with fewer carbs, fat, and lactose but more protein.

You can also use plant-based protein powders. Aim for one that has at least 25 grams of protein per serving. Also, you can always add your favorite protein powder to a smoothie for a great meal replacement. Check out this post for 21 Smoothies That Boost Metabolism.

5. Apple cider vinegar drink

Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which research suggests may increase calorie and fat burn. But that’s not all.

Apple cider vinegar can also help improve blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity and lowering blood sugar levels after meals. This can help stabilize energy levels and prevent spikes that may impact metabolism.

Apple cider vinegar can also act as an appetite suppressant, aid in digestion, and improve gut microbiome. Research now suggests that your gut microbiome could play a huge factor in your ability to lose weight.

To make an apple cider drink, I just add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to cold water, half a squeezed lemon, and drink. But you can add some sweetener to taste, preferably a sugar substitute or a teaspoon of maple syrup or honey.

6. Kombucha drink

As previously mentioned, gut health is crucial for overall health. It has been recently tied to many things, including our ability or inability to lose weight.

The microbiome that makes up your gut is believed to give some indication of whether your weight loss endeavors will be a success. The better your gut health, the better everything else works, including your metabolism.

Your gut helps you digest food and absorb its nutrients. If your body is not digesting things properly, you may gain weight or have a harder time losing weight. So, if you are looking for a drink loaded with probiotics (good bacteria), kombucha is that drink.

Kombucha is a fermented tea beverage with ancient roots. It is made by fermenting sweetened tea with a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, also called SCOBY.

This process transforms the initial mixture into a tangy drink known for its distinct flavor profile and potential health benefits. Not only is kombucha promote good gut health but it is also low in calories.

Where to buy?

You should be able to find kombucha at your local grocery or health food store. Look for one that is low in added sugars.

7. Black tea

morning boost drinks

We often talk about green tea and its amazing benefits, but did you know that black tea also has some excellent health and weight loss benefits?

Both green tea and black tea are derived from the same leaves, the Camellia sinensis plant. The main difference between the two is oxidation. Green tea is not oxidized, while black tea is, giving it its dark color.

Like green tea, black tea is also rich in polyphenols, potent antioxidants known for their metabolic-boosting properties. Green tea is known for its high levels of EGCG, and while black tea also contains EGCG, it contains considerably less.

However, black tea contains theaflavins, which are antioxidant polyphenols that also have health and weight loss benefits.

These bioactive compounds in black tea have been shown to stimulate thermogenesis, the process by which the body generates heat and burns calories, aiding in weight management and metabolic regulation.

Also, like green tea, black tea also contains caffeine, just more of it, which also helps give metabolism a boost. So, if you are looking for a bit more caffeine, black tea is the way to go.

8. Cayenne pepper drink

drinks to boost metabolism fat burning

Cayenne pepper drink is very easy to make; just add a 1/2 of a squeezed lemon to a cup of warm water. Add about 1/2 teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper and stir and drink.

So why cayenne pepper?

Cayenne pepper has been shown to increase metabolism. The capsaicin found in cayenne pepper is responsible for its heat and metabolic benefits.

Studies suggest that consuming capsaicin can increase the BMR for a short time after consuming the spice, leading to more calories being burned. It may also help to reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness, leading to a lower calorie intake throughout the day.

9. Water – One of the best metabolism boosting drinks

fat burning drinks before bed

Last but certainly not least, water! Water is the one drink our bodies cannot do without. We need it to stay alive and maintain good health, and it can also aid in weight loss.

Water fills you up, helping you eat less, but it also helps you burn more calories. Did you know that for every 16.9 oz of water you consume, you have the potential to increase your metabolic rate by as much as 30%? This is exactly what this study found out.

The more water you drink, the more calories you burn. And one way to burn even more calories is to drink your water cold.

Drinking ice-cold water can give your metabolism an extra boost. For weight loss, you should drink a minimum of 8 glasses per day, but many experts suggest drinking more. For more information on the weight loss benefits of drinking water, check out this post.
