So, if you have never tried papaya before, you might be wondering where this fruit came from and what it tastes like.
Papaya is a sweet, fleshy fruit with a tropical fruity flavor somewhere between a mango and a melon. It is found in countries and regions with a tropical climate. But it’s believed to have originated from Southern Mexico and Central America.
It’s rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants like zeaxanthin, which is extremely beneficial for eye health. It also contains enzymes like papain and chymopapain that aid in digestion and can help reduce inflammation.
Papaya provides a good source of vitamins A, C, E, and folate. It also provides a good source of copper and magnesium. Magnesium can help with many things, including mood, sleep, and cardiovascular health.
This fruit is also extremely high in potassium! Potassium is essential for maintaining fluid balance in the body.
It can also help improve cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure and lowering risks for stroke.
Benefits of papaya include:
- Improves digestion
- Reduces inflammation
- Helps immune system
- Helps prevent asthma
- It can help lower cholesterol levels
- Can improve sleep
- Can improve memory
- Helps manage glucose levels
- Lower blood pressure
- Reduce the risk of diabetes
- Reduce the risk of certain cancers
- Helps wounds heal faster
Does papaya melt fat?
Yes, papaya is a great food to incorporate into your diet to lose weight. But how does this fruit help?
For starters, papaya is low in calories, containing just 62 calories per cup.
It’s also high in water. Foods high in water are extremely weight loss friendly because they help fill you up on very few calories, allowing you to eat less.
Now, let’s talk fiber! The papaya fruit provides a good source of fiber, 2.5 grams per cup, which helps improve gut health and increases feelings of fullness.
People often underestimate the importance of fiber when they embark on their weight loss journey and focus on all the things they should remove from their diet rather than what they need to add more of.
Fiber is something you should focus on adding more of to your diet.
Did you know that high-fiber diets have been linked to increased weight loss success? One study found that people who eat high-fiber diets tend to have a higher weight loss success rate, which makes sense if you think about it.
As mentioned, fiber fills you up, improves your gut health, promotes regularity, and helps maintain stable blood sugar levels, which are all important for weight loss.
But it doesn’t end there!
Papaya is also low on the glycemic index. The lower the number on this scale, the less the food affects blood sugar levels. Again, maintaining stable blood sugar throughout the day is essential for maximum weight loss.
Is this papaya shake good for weight loss?
This papaya smoothie recipe is great for weight loss. I’ve already discussed the benefits of the papaya, but what makes this smoothie overall great at helping you lose weight?
It’s low in calories, high in protein and fiber, and has healthy fats!
This combination is a win-win for weight loss! This apple papaya smoothie for weight loss fills you up, and it’s loaded with nutrient-dense weight loss-friendly ingredients.
Key Ingredients In This Banana Papaya Smoothie For Weight Loss
As previously discussed, papaya has some excellent health and weight loss benefits. It turns this smoothie into a smooth and creamy tropical drink.
Bananas are a true smoothie staple. They add sweetness and give smoothies a creamy texture, but when combined with the papaya fruit in this drink, you are left with an extra creamy smoothie.
But more importantly, bananas are great for weight loss. They are high in fiber and low in calories. From a health standpoint, bananas are full of essential vitamins like A, B6, and C.
They are extremely rich in minerals like potassium and magnesium, which can help improve cardiovascular health and may even lower blood pressure.
Apples are incredibly nutrient-dense. They are full of important nutrients and loaded with polyphenols, a type of antioxidant.
I’m sure you’ve probably heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” And while it may not literally keep the doctor away, this phrase speaks to how nutrient-dense foods like apples can benefit your overall health.
Apples provide a good source of vitamin C and potassium. They are also high in antioxidants like quercetin, phloridzin, and catechin.
Benefits of apples include:
- It can help prevent diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels
- Lower cholesterol levels
- Lowers the risk for certain types of cancers
- Reduce the risk of stroke
- Improved mental health
Apples are a great addition to this smoothie recipe because they are a good source of fiber, low in calories, and add a natural sweetness to this recipe.
A medium apple has just 95 calories and 4.3 grams of fiber.
In addition to the fullness you will gain from the fiber, apples are also filling because of their water intake; water accounts for about 86%. Foods high in water are great because they fill you up with fewer calories.
But when it comes to weight loss, it doesn’t end there. Research suggests that polyphenols found in apples may have anti-obesity effects.
Chia seeds are amazing for smoothies. I especially love the texture they add to smoothie recipes.
But more importantly, chia seeds are a great addition to this smoothie recipe because they add three significant weight loss-friendly elements: fiber, protein, and healthy fats.
A serving size of chia seeds, which is about 2 ½ tablespoons, provides about 10 grams of fiber, 9 grams of fats, and 5 grams of protein.
I only use 1 tablespoon of chia seeds in this papaya juice recipe to reduce calories. Still, 1 tablespoon is enough to add some extra fiber to this smoothie as this smoothie does not contain any greens.
Unsweetened coconut milk
Unsweetened coconut milk is an excellent base for this smoothie. For one, it’s low in calories, has no sugar, goes really well with the papaya and banana in this smoothie, and lends to that tropical vibe.
The coconut milk also adds to the creaminess of the smoothie.
Protein powder is a vital ingredient in this weight loss smoothie recipe. It makes this smoothie a complete and balanced meal. PLUS protein is filling, satisfying, and burns fat, which are all super important for weight loss.
Look for a protein powder with at least 25 grams of protein for this recipe. I typically use whey isolate, but any protein powder will do. Also, because weight loss is the primary goal, look for a brand low in sugar.
Ground turmeric (optional)
Yes, turmeric in this smoothie is optional. But consider adding it, as turmeric has loads of benefits.
Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Antioxidants help reduce the risk of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, lung disease, certain cancers, and cognitive decline.
Turmeric also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help with weight loss.
Chronic inflammation is linked to obesity and can make weight loss difficult, so foods like turmeric that help reduce inflammation can help. It can also help maintain stable blood sugar levels.
This spice does have a bitter taste, but the fruits in this smoothie will mask the taste, and we are only using ¼ teaspoon.
Papaya Smoothie For Weight Loss Recipe
- 1 cup chopped papaya
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 10 oz unsweetened coconut milk
- 1 scoop protein powder
- 1/4 ground turmeric (optional)
- 1/2 medium apple
Add all the ingredients to a high-speed blender in the following order: coconut milk, protein powder, frozen banana, apple, papaya, chia seeds, and turmeric (if using it). Blend until smooth.
Variations and substitutions for this papaya shake for weight loss
Feel free to swap out the coconut milk and make this papaya smoothie with almond milk or any other unsweetened plant-based milk you like.
This smoothie does not have any greens, which is pretty unusual for most of my smoothie recipes, but don’t worry, this recipe is still high in fiber.
But adding greens will only make this smoothie better for you and your waistline, so consider adding some.
Choose any protein powder, whey, whey isolate, or a vegan protein powder. Just try to aim for 25 grams of protein or more and one that is low in sugar.
The brand I use has 25 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar, and just 110 calories. Please note nutritional info is based on these numbers.
As previously mentioned, turmeric is good for you but still optional, but if you want some extra anti-inflammatory benefits of a spice but don’t like the taste of turmeric, consider adding ground ginger.
Ginger has many benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties, and can help boost metabolism.
Storage for your papaya and banana smoothie for weight loss
Drink immediately, but if you want to store this drink for later use, store it in a jar with a tightly sealed lid. It is best to freeze it and blend again when ready to drink it.
